The support we can offer through board engagement and development can be quite varied and at its simplest can be supporting the members with some ‘masterclasses’ in current leadership and management on the ‘technical’ aspects of the board member’s roles – strategy development, visioning, organisational development and design, use of tools like McKinsey 7S and others.
However, what sets us apart is our ability to gain greater insight and benefit for the board members, both individually and collectively, by using Barrett Analytics to help understand the individual values, behaviours and drivers and how these can be explored to move from a group of individuals to a high performing team.
Working from a positive psychology perspective we work on strengthening those interactions, behaviours and skills which enhance achievement of the Board’s objectives while at the same time clearly understanding and articulating the analytical evidence of those behaviours that may be inhibiting the Board.Very often in our experience a programme of ‘Board engagement and development’ will be a natural follow-on to an earlier Board Review or may also result from a Board ‘skills audit.
And sometimes it is really quite simply helping board members to see and respect each other not only for their technical skills in finance, marketing or operations etc., but to see and appreciate the ‘whole person’ and the qualitative aspects that they can bring to developing a cohesive, collaborative, mutually respectful team focused on joint delivery and success.
